Alchemy

Overview

Alchemy is the art of brewing magical potions from reagents and other ingredients. Alchemists can create a wide variety of potions that provide healing, enhance attributes, cure poison, and even create explosive concoctions. The skill is essential for adventurers who want to be self-sufficient in the field or for entrepreneurs looking to supply other players with consumables.

Getting Started

To practice Alchemy, you'll need: - Alchemy skill - Your skill level determines what potions you can craft and your success rate - Mortar and Pestle - The primary tool for brewing potions - Empty Bottles - Required for all potion recipes - Reagents - Various magical reagents depending on the potion type

Skill Requirements

Alchemy skill affects: - Your ability to successfully craft potions - The potency of potions you create (bonus increases with skill) - Your chance to automatically fill potion kegs when crafting

Skill Bonus Formula: You gain a bonus to potion effectiveness equal to (Alchemy Skill × 10 ÷ 33), which enhances healing amounts, duration of buff potions, and other effects.

Potion Kegs

Potion kegs are special containers that can hold up to 100 doses of a single potion type. They're an efficient way to store and transport large quantities of potions.

Using Potion Kegs

  • Filling a Keg: Drag and drop potions onto an empty or partially-filled keg
  • The keg must be empty or contain the same potion type
  • You cannot mix different potion types in one keg
  • You receive empty bottles back when filling a keg
  • Kegs can hold a maximum of 100 doses

  • Drawing from a Keg: Double-click the keg with empty bottles in your backpack

  • Consumes one empty bottle per potion drawn
  • Places the potion in your backpack
  • The keg displays how full it is when examined

  • Auto-Fill Feature: When crafting potions with Alchemy, if you have a partially-filled keg (1-99 doses) of the same type in your backpack, the newly crafted potion automatically fills the keg instead of creating a separate bottle

Keg Capacity Messages

  • Empty: "The keg is empty."
  • 1-4 doses: "The keg is nearly empty."
  • 5-19 doses: "The keg is not very full."
  • 20-29 doses: "The keg is about one quarter full."
  • 30-39 doses: "The keg is about one third full."
  • 40-46 doses: "The keg is almost half full."
  • 47-53 doses: "The keg is approximately half full."
  • 54-69 doses: "The keg is more than half full."
  • 70-79 doses: "The keg is about three quarters full."
  • 80-95 doses: "The keg is very full."
  • 96-99 doses: "The liquid is almost to the top of the keg."
  • 100 doses: "The keg is completely full."

Crafting Mechanics

Success and Failure

  • Your chance to successfully craft a potion depends on your Alchemy skill and the difficulty of the recipe
  • The skill range shown (e.g., "15.0 to 65.0") indicates:
  • Minimum skill: Below this, you have 0% chance to succeed
  • Maximum skill: At or above this, you have 100% chance to succeed
  • Between these values, your success chance scales proportionally

Failed Attempts

  • When you fail to craft a potion, you receive an empty bottle back
  • Some materials may be lost on failure
  • Your tool (Mortar and Pestle) loses durability with each attempt

Tool Durability

  • Mortar and Pestles have limited uses
  • When your tool breaks, you'll receive the message: "You have worn out your tool"
  • Keep spare tools in your backpack for extended crafting sessions

Tips for Alchemists

  1. Skill Training: Start with easier recipes like Refresh Potions and Nightsight Potions to build your skill before attempting more difficult brews

  2. Bulk Crafting: Use potion kegs to store large quantities of commonly-used potions efficiently

  3. Reagent Management: Buy reagents in bulk from NPC vendors or gather them yourself to reduce costs

  4. Healing Potion Strategy: The 10-second delay between healing potions is the same for all tiers, so carry a mix of Lesser, regular, and Greater Heal Potions to maximize healing potential

  5. Buff Stacking: Agility and Strength potions can be used together for combined stat bonuses

  6. Combat Preparation: Stock up on cure potions and healing potions before venturing into dangerous areas

  7. Poison Application: Poison potions are most effective when used with the Poisoning skill to apply to weapons

  8. Keg Economics: Selling filled potion kegs can be more profitable than individual potions due to convenience for buyers

Potion Usage Rules

  • Free Hand Required: You must have at least one free hand to drink most potions
  • Proximity: You must be within 1 tile of a potion to use it
  • Healing Cooldown: 10 seconds must pass between drinking healing potions
  • Poison/Mortal Wound: Cannot drink healing potions while poisoned or mortally wounded
  • Revealing Action: Drinking a potion reveals hidden characters

Sound Effects

  • Crafting: You'll hear a distinctive sound (0x242) when brewing potions
  • Success: A bottle-filling sound (0x240) plays when successfully creating a potion
  • Drinking: A drinking sound (0x2D6) plays when consuming a potion
