Bowfletching¶
Overview¶
Bowfletching is the art of crafting bows, crossbows, and ammunition on UO:X. This skill allows players to create ranged weapons and the arrows and bolts needed to use them. Fletchers work primarily with wood, transforming logs into deadly weapons and ammunition for archers.
Getting Started¶
To begin fletching, you'll need:
- Fletching Tools - Used to craft all fletching items
- Logs - The primary material for most recipes
- Feathers - Required for ammunition crafting
Skill Gains¶
Bowfletching skill increases through practice. The skill uses the following stat scaling: - Primary Stat: Dexterity - Secondary Stat: Strength
Your effective skill is calculated from your base Fletching skill plus bonuses from your stats. As you craft items, you'll gain skill based on the difficulty of the recipe and your current skill level.

Quality and Exceptional Items¶
When crafting weapons, you have a chance to create exceptional quality items based on your skill level. The chance of success increases as your skill approaches the maximum difficulty for each recipe.
Quality Levels¶
- Below Average - Barely successful crafts at low skill
- Normal Quality - Standard items
- Exceptional Quality - Superior items with enhanced properties
Exceptional items can bear your maker's mark if you have that option enabled in the crafting menu.
Crafting Process¶
- Equip or have fletching tools accessible - Tools must be in your pack or equipped
- Use the fletching tools - Opens the crafting menu
- Select your recipe - Choose from available categories
- Select material type - Choose your wood type (if you have the required skill)
- Craft the item - The system will attempt to create the item
Success and Failure¶
- Success: You create the item and may gain skill
- Failure with material loss: Some materials are consumed but no item is created
- Failure without material loss: No materials are lost
- Tool breakage: Tools have limited uses and will eventually wear out
Tips for Skill Gain¶
- Start with shafts and ammunition - These are cheap and use materials efficiently
- Progress to bows at 30.0 skill - Good balance of material cost and skill gain
- Use higher quality woods - When available, better materials can improve success rates
- Craft in bulk - Ammunition crafting uses all available materials, making it efficient
- Keep tools stocked - Always carry spare fletching tools as they wear out with use
- Mark your work - Enable maker's marks on exceptional items to build your reputation
Resource Management¶
Efficient Material Use¶
- Shafts: Craft these in bulk from logs, then use them for ammunition
- Ammunition: The system automatically uses all available shafts and feathers
- Logs: Higher tier woods become available at specific skill levels
Gathering Materials¶
- Logs: Obtained through the Lumberjacking skill
- Feathers: Looted from birds or purchased from NPCs
- Special Woods: Require higher Lumberjacking skill to harvest
Repair System¶
Bowfletching does not include a repair system on this server. Damaged bows and crossbows cannot be repaired through fletching.
Advanced Techniques¶
Material Selection¶
When you have access to multiple wood types, consider: - Cost vs. Benefit: Higher tier woods are rarer but produce better items - Skill Level: Use materials appropriate to your current skill for optimal gains - Market Demand: Exceptional items made from rare woods command premium prices
Maker's Mark¶
Enable the maker's mark option to sign your exceptional creations. This: - Identifies you as the crafter - Can increase the value of your work - Builds your reputation as a master fletcher
