Carpentry

Overview

Carpentry is a crafting skill that allows players to create a wide variety of wooden items, from simple furniture and containers to complex musical instruments and training equipment. Carpenters work primarily with logs and boards, transforming raw lumber into useful and decorative items for homes, shops, and adventuring.

Getting Started

Required Tools

To practice Carpentry, you need:

  • Carpentry Tools - Used to craft items from wood
  • Logs or Boards - Primary crafting material

Skill Gain

Carpentry skill increases through successful crafting attempts. The difficulty of the item you're crafting affects your chance to gain skill:

  • Craft items near your current skill level for optimal gains
  • Items too easy (green difficulty) provide minimal or no skill gain
  • Items too difficult (red difficulty) have high failure rates
  • The skill cap is 100.0

Wood Types

Carpentry supports multiple wood types, each requiring different skill levels to work with:

Wood Type Required Skill Notes
Regular Logs/Boards 0.0 Standard wood, available everywhere
Oak 65.0 Harder wood with enhanced properties
Ash 80.0 Strong wood for quality items
Yew 95.0 Premium wood for exceptional crafts
Heartwood 100.0 Rare, high-quality wood
Bloodwood 100.0 Rare, distinctive red wood
Frostwood 100.0 Rare, pale wood from cold regions

Higher quality woods can be used to craft items with better durability and appearance.

Tips for Carpenters

Skill Gain Strategy

  • Start with simple items like stools and small crates
  • Progress to medium difficulty items like chairs and wooden chests
  • Move to complex items like instruments and large furniture as you approach Grandmaster
  • Craft items that are slightly above your current skill for best gains

Resource Management

  • Regular logs are abundant and perfect for skill training
  • Save rare woods (Heartwood, Bloodwood, Frostwood) for exceptional quality items
  • Consider the market value of items versus material costs
  • Barrel components are cheap to make and useful for other crafters

Profitable Crafting

  • Musical instruments sell well to bards
  • Training equipment is always in demand
  • Furniture and containers are essential for homeowners
  • Kegs are needed by alchemists
  • Exceptional quality items command premium prices

Multi-Skill Synergy

Many carpentry items require secondary skills: - Tailoring - For beds, training equipment, instruments, and tailoring stations - Blacksmithing - For forges and anvils - Tinkering - For cooking equipment - Magery - For magical furniture - Musicianship - For instruments

Consider developing these complementary skills to expand your crafting options.

Advanced Techniques

Bulk Order Deeds (BODs)

Carpenters may receive Bulk Order Deeds from NPC carpenters, requesting specific quantities of items. Completing these orders provides rewards and reputation.

House Decoration

Carpentry is essential for furnishing player houses: - Create complete furniture sets for themed rooms - Build storage solutions for organizing items - Craft decorative pieces to personalize spaces - Provide essential equipment like looms and forges

Resource Gathering

Pair Carpentry with Lumberjacking to: - Harvest your own materials - Access rare wood types from special trees - Reduce crafting costs - Maintain a steady supply of resources
