Tailoring

Overview

Tailoring is a crafting skill that allows players to create clothing, cloth armor, leather armor, and various decorative items. Tailors work with cloth and leather to produce everything from simple shirts to protective studded armor. The skill is essential for creating both fashionable attire and functional armor for adventurers.

Getting Started

To practice tailoring, you'll need: - Sewing Kit - Your primary crafting tool - Materials - Cloth or leather depending on what you're crafting - Access to your materials (they must be in your backpack or nearby)

Skill Gain

Tailoring skill increases through successful crafting attempts. The skill gain formula considers: - Primary Stat: Dexterity - Secondary Stat: Intelligence - Gain Factor: Standard crafting progression

To gain skill effectively: 1. Start with simple items at low skill levels (bandanas, skull caps) 2. Progress to more complex items as your skill increases 3. Craft items near your current skill level for optimal gains 4. Items that are too easy (gray) won't provide skill gains 5. Items that are too difficult have a lower chance of success

Materials

Cloth

Standard cloth is used for most clothing items. The amount required varies by item complexity: - Simple items (bandanas, body sashes): 2-4 cloth - Medium items (shirts, pants): 6-10 cloth - Complex items (robes, fancy dresses): 12-16 cloth

Leather Types

Different leather types provide varying levels of protection and require different skill levels:

Leather Type Min Skill Properties
Leather 0.0 Standard material for all leather items
Spined Leather 65.0 Enhanced protection
Horned Leather 80.0 Superior protection
Barbed Leather 99.0 Exceptional protection

Higher quality leathers produce armor with better defensive properties.

Crafting Quality

Success Chance

Your chance to successfully craft an item depends on: - Your tailoring skill level - The difficulty of the item - The quality of materials used

The system uses a "Chance Minus Sixty to Forty-Five" calculation, meaning your effective skill is reduced when determining success.

Exceptional Items

When crafting, you have a chance to create an exceptional quality item. Exceptional items: - Have superior properties compared to normal items - Can bear your maker's mark (if you have the mark option enabled) - Require higher skill levels to consistently produce - Provide better protection for armor pieces

The chance to create exceptional items increases as your skill approaches the maximum skill level for that item.

Quality Messages

When you complete a craft attempt, you'll receive one of these messages: - "You were barely able to make this item. It's quality is below average." - Low quality success - "You create the item." - Normal quality success - "You create an exceptional quality item." - Exceptional quality without maker's mark - "You create an exceptional quality item and affix your maker's mark." - Exceptional with your mark - "You failed to create the item, but no materials were lost." - Failed attempt, materials saved - "You failed to create the item, and some of your materials are lost." - Failed attempt, materials consumed

Maker's Mark

Tailors can choose to place their maker's mark on exceptional items they create. This: - Identifies you as the crafter - Adds prestige to your work - Can be toggled on/off in the crafting menu

Tool Usage

Sewing kits have limited uses and will eventually wear out. When your tool breaks, you'll see the message: "You have worn out your tool"

Always carry spare sewing kits when crafting in bulk.

Material Selection

When crafting leather armor, you can choose which type of leather to use: 1. Open the tailoring menu 2. Select "Materials" option 3. Choose from available leather types (based on your skill) 4. Higher quality leathers require higher skill to select and use

Dyeing and Customization

Cloth items retain the color of the cloth used to create them. This allows you to: - Use pre-dyed cloth to create colored clothing - Create matching outfits - Produce unique color combinations

Items that can be colored from cloth include: - Most clothing items - Decorative mats and deeds

Tips for Success

  1. Start Simple: Begin with bandanas and skull caps to build your skill from 0-25
  2. Progress Gradually: Move to shirts and pants around 20-30 skill
  3. Leather Armor Path: Start leather armor around 50 skill, studded armor around 80 skill
  4. Material Management: Keep materials organized in your backpack for easy access
  5. Tool Supply: Always carry multiple sewing kits
  6. Skill Gains: Craft items slightly above your current skill level for best gains
  7. Exceptional Crafting: Once you reach high skill, focus on items you can make exceptional for better profit
  8. Leather Types: Upgrade to spined leather at 65 skill, horned at 80, and barbed at 99 for superior armor
  9. Bone Armor: Collect bones from skeleton creatures for high-end bone armor crafting

Advanced Crafting

Bone Armor

Bone armor represents the pinnacle of tailoring armor crafting, requiring: - High tailoring skill (85-96 minimum) - Both leather and bone materials - Bones can be obtained from skeleton creatures

Bone armor provides excellent protection and is highly valued by warriors.

Material Efficiency

Some items can be crafted with the "Use All Resources" option, which will consume all available materials to create multiple items in one crafting session. This is useful for bulk production of simple items.

Repair and Enhancement

On UO:X, tailors can repair damaged leather and studded armor using their sewing kit. The repair chance depends on your tailoring skill and the item's current durability.
